+ UCSD Wedge Phases I-III
Neil Hadley While at SPLA | San Diego, California+

The Wedge was envisioned in the North Campus Master Plan to be the major open space in the north campus, surrounded by housing and academic buildings. The design for the wedge provides a unique experience for pedestrians, providing connections to the campus at large from all directions. The Wedge accommodates an accessible path of travel (to negotiate over sixty feet of grade change) from North Torrey Pines Road, to Ridge walk through a series of meandering walkways through native coastal plantings that replicate the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean to the west. The native coastal plantings incorporate bioswales for storm water management, while contrasting sculptural lawn panels provide large expanses of open space for out door recreation and relaxation. A large flat lawn adjacent to the Rady School of Management was designed to accommodate a 1000 person graduation ceremony.
