+ Kaiser Small Hospital Innovation Competition | 2011
landLAB and architects MDWF+

landLAB collaborated with Architects MDWF for a design competition hosted by Kaiser Permanente. The design was based around the concept of a 'healing mercado' using colors of the chakra to define space and promote wellness.

HEALING / COMMUNITY GARDENS - Sensory experiences in the garden can promote physical and emotional healing in patients and garden users. Witnessing growth, changes in season, color, texture and fragrance all can inspire wellbeing, strength and hope. A hierarchy of garden spaces and various types of garden environments facilitates private meditation, intimate meetings or social interaction for all users.

LANDSCAPE PLANTING - Proposed plant palette will be predominantly drought tolerant, non-invasive and site/climate specific California native plant species. Specialty gardens may feature plants with sensory qualities and traditional native/medicinal plants. A combination of shade structures, canopy trees and green roofs will help to reduce the urban-heat island effect and create a cooler microclimate.
