The Checkal Residence is located in Ocean Beach, a small beach community in San Diego, California. The design for the backyard focused on creating a number of outdoor rooms in a simple, contemporary mix of hardscape materials for entertaining and relaxing in the beautiful San Diego climate. Directly off of the main living area and kitchen, is the outdoor dining and bar area that also features a gas fire pit with built in seating. Separated by a slight grade change is the built in custom concrete spa and lap pool with a large terrace for sunbathing, screened by lush bamboo plantings. A new carport with an outdoor shower and change rooms encloses the edge of the space and is surrounded by a small lawn area for the kids to play.
